Combatants Quest 2002

Rules and Scoring -----

General Rules:  (This contest is meant to be fun, please remember this while planning your design.  Safety is a requirement; there will be families with children at the contest.) 

  • There will be two awards presented after the competition. 
    • The Pilot’s Choice Award will be awarded to the builder who designs and builds the best scale model for this contest.  Points will be awarded based on the scoring information below and peer voting.
    • The Ace’s Award will be awarded to the pilot who accumulates the most flight points from the Hand Launch and Dog Fight portions of this contest.  Points will be awarded based on the scoring information below.
  • Participants must build and fly their own sailplanes
  • All sailplanes must be constructed as 1/12 scale WWII Fighter aircraft.  WWII Fighter aircraft is defined as any fighter airplane which was built and/or utilized during WWII and meets the criteria listed below.  Kits may be used as long as they meet the 1/12 scale requirements.  (Please note Kit suppliers.)
  • Plane specifications will need to be provided to allow for scale confirmation and authenticity of markings, etc.
  • All planes must have a wingspan between 32” and 42”.  (please note scale calculation spreadsheet) 
  • Construction Scoring (1st day competition meet at park or athletic field)
    • Design Guidelines:
      • 100pts                Scratch Built model (built up construction)
      •   50pts                Kit Built model (built up construction)
      •   25pts                No balancing weight added
      •   15pts                Actual documented paint scheme for make and model of aircraft
      •     5pts                No fiberglass
    • Bonus and Penalties which adjust points:
      •   30pts                Detailed cockpit
      •   30pts                Misc. Mechanical Feature (i.e. bomb bay door, working canapy, etc.)
      •   20pts                No external control linkage
      •   20pts                Wing Loading less than 10oz/ft2  (please note wing loading calculation chart)
      •   15pts                Landing gear (may remove for Dog Fight)  Planes with none retractable gear must always display gear.
      •   10pts                Detailed pilot
      •   10pts                Detail modification (i.e. LED type lights, bomb detail, etc.)
      •   10pts                Fourth Servo
      • -30pts                Not built to scale dimensions (+/- 1%)
    • Disqualification:
      •                  Not built to scale (dimensions <> than 10%)
      •                  Use of Foam Wings and/or fuselage
      •                  Use of Fiberglass Fuselage
      •                  Use of EPP Wings and/or fuselage
      •                  Radio Frequency Jamming
      •                  Sharp (knife like) leading edges.
      •                  Fire Discharge from sailplane.  (rockets OK)
      •                  Projectiles (like BB’s or Pellets)
  • Flight Scoring:
    • Hand Launch (1st day competition at park or athletic field)
      •  540pts      3x3 minute flights, +1pts for every second in flight and –2pts for every second in flight beyond 3 minute mark. (3x180=540)
      •  300pts      Best of 3 attempts for longest flight.  1st place 300pts, 2nd 250pts, 3rd, 200pts, etc…..
      • NOpts        Fun Fly Golf and/or target flying. (no points will be awarded)
    • Dog Fight  (2nd day competition at Pacific City Sand Dune) [if no wind and or lift, draw straws for duels]
      • 1000pts      Last sailplane in the air.
        • All launch for head to head combat.

  – OR -

      • 1000pts      Single Elimination Duels.
        • Draw straws for placement on single elimination chart
        • Pairs go head to head (play chicken at 20 paces)
        • Must make contact
        • Last one in air after contact moves on.
        • Best record wins
