Combatants Quest 2008

Date:  August 2008

Rules and Scoring ----- Combatants Quest IX

General Rules:  (This contest is meant to be fun, please remember this while planning your design.  Safety is a requirement; there will be families with children at the contest.)

Its time again when we start planning for Combatant's Quest, aka..."combat of the crunches".  The overall goal for Combatants Quest is to be the last man flying. Whether your tactic is aggressive or passive your sailplane will need to be built tough enough to withstand mid-air collisions. Ramming each other in mid-air is the game and the goal is to eliminate your competition by causing enough structural damage so they cannot return to competition.  Every year we change strategies slightly to adjust to the type of combat in which we will compete to make it interesting. A new rule this year allows you to use existing manufacturer model kits. Another new rule this year is to allow similar plane types. In the past we limited one type of plane per participant. So, go ahead and register yourself and your plane by going to the Register page ASAP.

We will be flying at the Oregon Coast (location TBD), were we have flown these sailplanes before.  Check out Contest Results from 2002.

  • There will be two awards presented after the competition.
    • Pilot's choice award will be awarded to the pilot who's plane has impressed all the other pilots and has scored the most points listed in the Construction Scoring section below.
    • The Ace’s Award will be awarded to the pilot who accumulates the most flight points from the Dog Fight portion of this contest.  This always means the last man flying.
  • Participants may help each other build and fly their contest sailplanes
  • All sailplanes must be constructed as 1/12 scale WWII Fighter or Fighter/Bomber aircraft.  WWII Fighter aircraft is defined as any fighter airplane which was built and/or utilized during WWII and meets the criteria listed below. Test planes and limited volume designs built during WWII are acceptable.  Kits may be used as long as they meet the 1/12 scale requirements.
  • Plane specifications will need to be provided to allow for scale confirmation.
  • All planes must have a wingspan between 29” and 45”.  (please note scale calculation spreadsheet)
  • Construction Scoring: (500pts max)
    • Design Guidelines:
      • 200pts  Scratch Built model (FROM PLANS) (built-up or box construction; balsa only)
      • 100pts  Scratch Built model (FROM PLANS) (built-up or box construction; balsa, hardwoods, fiberglass wing joint only)
      •   50pts  Kit Built model (FROM KIT) (built-up or box construction; balsa hardwoods, fiberglass wing joint only)
    • Bonus and Penalties which adjust points:
      • 100pts  Majority vote from participating pilots (vote to be taken prior to dog fight)
      •   50pts  Plane weighs-in at 16 oz. or less (flight weight and must pass CG test)
      •   30pts  Detailed cockpit
      •   30pts  Misc. Mechanical Feature (i.e. working canopy, working landing gear, etc.)
      •   25pts  No balancing weight added
      •   20pts  No external control linkage
      •   20pts  Camouflage Pattern and scheme for make and model of plane including Squadron markings (Paint/Monokote/fabric)
      •   15pts  No more than 2" wide fiberglass tape for wing joint(s).  (full circumference around wing cord)
      •   10pts  Detail modification (i.e. LED type lights, bomb detail, etc.)
      •     0pts  Plane weighs-in between 16 & 22 oz. (flight weight and must pass CG test)
      •  -20pts  Plane weighs-in over 22 oz. (flight weight and must pass CG test)
      •  -30pts  No Pilot (pilot must be visible through canopy)
    • Disqualification: (please note these items)
      •  Not built to scale (dimensions <> 5% for Fuselage length and <> 20% for Wingspan)
      •  Use of Foam Wings and/or fuselage
      •  Use of too much Fiberglass on plane (can use up-to 2" wide strip for wing center joint.)
      •  Use of EPP Wings and/or fuselage
      •  Use of Carbon Fiber (tape or rods) or the like except for pushrods
      •  Use of any non-wood material for structural design.
      •  Radio Frequency Jamming .
      •  Sharp (knife like) leading edges.
      •  Fire Discharge from sailplane.
      •  Projectiles from sailplanes (like BB’s or Pellets)
      •  Anything that may be dangerous to spectators

  • Flight Scoring: (1000pts max)
    • Slope flying
      • 1000pts for last man flying
    • Damage
      •   100pts for pilot kill.  (Knocking competitor's plane out of the air and eliminating from competition. Pilot is eliminated when their plane cannot return to flight without repairs.)
